Marilyn Monroe was anything but dumb but with her face and figure nobody cared how smart she was. On screen she was the beauty every man wanted. Off screen, her life was pretty dismal as true love continued to elude her. Conspiracy theories continue regarding her death in 1962: was it murder or suicide?
Marilyn Monroe and James Dougherty: She was sixteen-year-old Norma Jean Dougherty when she married Dougherty in 1942. The couple got a Las Vegas divorce in 1946.
Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio: The unlikely couple eloped in 1954 after DiMaggio was able to arrange a date with Monroe. Jealousy on DiMaggio’s part turned to abuse, and, 274 days after they got married, Monroe’s movie studio pressured her in divorcing DiMaggio on grounds of mental cruelty. A few years later, after Monroe’s divorce from Arthur Miller, DiMaggio and Monroe got back together and DiMaggio proposed marriage just four days before Monroe’s death in 1962.
Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller: The actress and the playwright got married first in a civil ceremony in 1956, and then in a Jewish ceremony two days later. By 1958 Monroe’s earning were paying for virtually all of their expenses including Miller’s first wife’s alimony payments. Their Mexican divorce was granted January 24, 1961. Less than a month later, Miller married one of the German photographers who was involved in the making of Marilyn’s last film, The Misfits, which he scripted as a gift for Monroe.
