‘Scams & Spam’

Email from Lady Ruth Davies

Let’s see… she is dying, bedridden, and has scheming family members monitoring her every move yet she is able to send me a lengthy email and stay in daily contact with her lawyer, the man I should immediately contact and develop a “confidential and Cordial relationship” with? Sounds legitimate to me!

Dearly Beloved,

I am Lady Ruth Davies suffering from cancerous ailment. I am married to Sir William Davies,a shipping tycoon notable for his great wealth, influential extended family, and charitable activities all his life before his death. Our life together as man and wife lasted for three decades without child. My husband died after a protracted illness in April 17, 2007. Read more »

My AOL Instant Messenger Account

This is the first email I’ve received regarding my AOL IM account — which I don’t have. No doubt plenty of people will be clicking through the bogus link in the email.

Dear AOL Instant Messenger user,

Your AIM account is flagged as inactive. Within the following 72 hours it’ll be deleted from the system.

If you plan to use this account in the future, you have to download and launch the latest update for the AIM. This update is critical.

In order to install the update use the following link. This link is generated exclusively for your account and is available within a certain period of time. As soon as this link is not available anymore you will get another letter.

Thank you,
AIM Service Team

Facebook Virus… Again

I almost did it. A Facebook friend sent me a message with a link to a YouTube video. I clicked the link and the rather plain page that came up popped up a message that in order to view the video I needed an updated version of Flash. Rather than download from the site, I went to Adobe.com and updated Flash… but what was puzzling was that the latest Adobe version of Flash was different than the one I supposedly needed to view the video.

I visited my friend’s Facebook page and saw that she had posted a warning to ignore the message that appeared to be from her — that it was a Worm/Virus and not to click on the link. The following legit YouTube video explains more:

When eBay Sales Go Wrong

I’ve done quite a bit of buying and selling on eBay over the years and the great majority of transactions have been fairly flawless. Now, however, both eBay and PayPal (which is owned by eBay) offer buyer protection but very little seller protection. My most recent sale will demonstrate what I mean. Read more »

The Obama Spam & Virus Onslaught

With the election over the idiots who write harmful viruses and send idiotic spams are busily jamming up the Internet with garbage. One such email is supposedly from news@cnn.com and contains a link to an “official” government web site. In reality, the link is to a very nasty little website that has nothing to do with anything good. Read more »

Another ‘Important’ Bank Notice

The biggest problem with the email I just received, as official as it appears, is that I don’t have an account with MT Bank — actually this is the first I’ve heard the name. The email is another dangerous fake. I’ve left the actual link visible so you can see just who wants to steal your information. Read more »
